Supporting Caregivers

Being the parent or caregiver of a child with eczema can bring a lot of different emotions.  It’s difficult to see your child uncomfortable or to feel helpless to stop their itch.  If your child isn’t sleeping, then most likely you are exhausted as well.  Even when your child’s eczema is in good control, there can be anxiety about when the next flare may occur.  You may have times that you feel overwhelmed or worried that you are not doing enough to help their child.

Know that you are not alone.  Managing a child’s eczema is not easy. Many other parents of children with eczema have felt this way, and you are doing your best.

Be kind to yourself.  Think about the encouraging words you would give to another parent of child with eczema who is struggling and show yourself the same compassion.  Take small breaks to recharge, whether it be reading, taking a walk outside, or talking with a friend.

Focus your energy on the things you can control.  You can’t control that your child has eczema, but you can take steps to manage it and support your child.

Connect with other parents and caregivers who understand.  The GPER Caregiver Support Program connects parents with a coach and other parents to support you as you manage your child’s eczema.
