EFFICACY
A review of 10 studies that included 307 adult and pediatric patients found that using bleach baths may slightly improve eczema severity and reduce staph bacteria on the skin. However, there is no significant improvement in symptoms such as itch or quality of sleep.
SAFETY
In a study, the most common side effects included: burning (4.7%), dryness (4.3 %), and itching (3.8%).
EVIDENCE LEVEL
There are limited published studies on bleach baths.
AVAILABILITY
No prescription required (widely available).

EFFICACY
Wet-wrap treatment using cream or ointment and a double layer of cotton bandages, with a moist first layer and a dry second layer, is an effective short-term intervention treatment in children with severe eczema.
Several studies showed an improvement in eczema severity and reduced need for topical steroids after 2-14 days of wet wrap therapy.
SAFETY
For children with severe eczema, the most common side effects included discomfort and inflammation of the hair follicle. Skin infections including herpes are rare in patients using wet wrap therapy.
Possible side effects associated with topical corticosteroids use may also be a concern.
EVIDENCE LEVEL
There are limited published studies on wet wraps.
AVAILABILITY
No prescription required (widely available).

EFFICACY
Allergy immunotherapy (AIT), whether through injections or drops under the tongue, exposes individuals to allergens to desensitize their immune system, potentially alleviating allergy symptoms, including those associated with atopic eczema.
A review of 23 studies that included 1957 adult and pediatric patients found that 40% of patients with allergen immunotherapy had a 50% improvement in their eczema severity (as measured by the EASI). However, there is no significant improvement in symptoms such as itch or quality of sleep. The AAAAI guidelines recommend AIT for moderate to severe eczema.
SAFETY
In a study, the most common side effects included symptoms related to the mouth and throat, such as temporary itching and irritation.
EVIDENCE LEVEL
Moderate evidence supports allergen immunotherapy for eczema.
AVAILABILITY
Please consult your doctor for further discussion regarding allergen immunotherapy.
