Where to Find Children’s Books About Eczema?
“What would help a child feel better about their eczema?” I ask when I interview parents to share their eczema stories. One mother answered, “I’d love a book for my six-year-old that wouldn’t make her feel so alone in her eczema.” Her comment sent me on a search for children’s books about eczema. There are a surprising number. I decided to read the ones I could find on Amazon and provide an honest review.

This coloring and activity story book was co-authored by GPER staff who experienced pediatric eczema first hand. From word hunts to mazes, this eczema children’s book is filled with exciting activities that can both help and distract your kid with eczema. The story explores the journey of eczema through the lens of a weather metaphor and provides resources and mindful activities to help combat the psychological struggles of growing up with eczema. I Have Eczema by Jean Greatsinger and Lisa Crosby
This eczema children’s book was co-authored by a registered nurse, but its not at all clinical. It covers high and low points in a day in the life of approximately 6-year old Emma which includes the irresistible urge to itch, wraps, lotions, her frustration about not being able to pet a dog and a trip to the dermatologist. It’s beautifully illustrated and I think any child eight and under would identify and be engaged. This is a great book for children who may want to see some representation of their shared eczema experience in literature.
Excerpt: “I don’t always like putting lotion on my skin. Sometimes I cry when the lotion stings me. I get cranky if the lotion is cold. And it is frustrating when clothes stick to me.”

The Itchy Kids Club by Gill Grabowski
This children’s eczema book includes a collection of twenty silly poems about itching but not always about eczema. What kid wouldn’t be tickled by poems like:
There once was a girl named Francie
Who could never eat anything fancy
For each time she tried, she’d break out in hives
And itch from her shirt to her panties
